Stamford has expanded significantly to the north over the last 60 years.\u00a0 Two 20th-Century churches are located in these housing developments: Stamford Free Church<\/a> (Baptist) and Christ Church<\/a> (C of E). \u00a0Also in Churches Together is the delightful\u00a0Great Casterton<\/a>\u00a0village church to the north west of town.<\/p>\n

The map shows in red the posited locations of 7 demolished and long-lost medieval churches: St Mary Bynnewerk<\/a>, Holy Trinity \/ St Stephen\u2019s<\/a>, St Peter\u2019s<\/a>,\u00a0 St Clement\u2019s<\/a>, St Andrew\u2019s<\/a>, St Michael Cornstall<\/a>, and All Saints\u2019 Beyond the Bridge<\/a>.\u00a0 The list is probably incomplete. \u00a0Stamford also had several monasteries with chapels. \u00a0At the eastern extremity of Stamford is the half-ruined St Leonard\u2019s Priory<\/a>. \u00a0Nearby only the gate remains of Greyfriars<\/a>\u00a0(which most locals incorrectly call Whitefriars Gate). \u00a0Just outside St. Peter’s Gate\u00a0at the west end of the town walls was the Austin Friary<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Stamford shares in the Fenlands’\u00a0long history of non-conformity, and saw many\u00a0Baptist<\/a> and other Non-conformist<\/a> chapels that flourished for a while but are now gone. \u00a0The Life Church decided to merge into St George’s in 2014. \u00a0The Salvation Army has vacated its premises in East\u00a0Street and joined with\u00a0Peterborough.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
